Step by Step Instructions
Step 1: Season the Flank Steak:
Clean and pat dry the flank stead if needed cut it into smaller more manageable pieces. Then season with Salt and Pepper feel free to adjust the amount of seasoning to your liking I usually start with 1 teaspoon of salt per side and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper, just make sure the steak is evenly coated with seasoning.
Step 2: Caramelized onions in cast iron:
Heat a cast iron skillet on medium heat and add a drizzle with oil and then add in 1 yellow onion cut in half and thinly sliced. Add into the preheated skillet and sauté until onion slices are translucent and caramelized. Set the caramelized onions aside on a plate.
Step 3: Flank steak on the stove:
In the same skillet after you remove the onions add some more oil (2 tbsp) and (2 tbsp) of butter and sear the pieces of seasoned flank steak. Let the cast iron flank steak rest for 10 minutes and then cut thick ¼ inch slices.
Step 4: Assemble Steak with caramelized onions:
To assemble the Steak sandwich cut open the 30-minute bread baguette and toast up on either the cast iron skillet or in a toaster. Then spread the Garlic mayo aioli onto the bread and top with slices of provolone cheese and sliced steak slices. On the other side add the caramelized onions. Feel free to garnish with arugula. Close the sandwich and enjoy!
Equipment Recommendation
Storage Guidelines
Store the seared steak in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. For best results make the sandwich fresh each time, but it does help if you have all the ingredients prepped.
These ingredients don't stand up well to freezing.
Top tip
Prepare all the ingredients such as searing the steak and caramelizing the onions in advance and make it a meal prep meal for lunches or a few dinners.
