Today I wanted to share my old-fashioned french toast recipe! Toasted bread with a delectable custard inside topped with maple syrup and fresh fruit is the perfect breakfast to enjoy with a make-ahead and meal prep options! I love a quick recipe that you most likely already have all the ingredients in your fridge. It's also the perfect way to use up bread that is going bad.
Ingredients for french toast:
-bread
-eggs
-whole milk
-cinnamon
-vanilla extract
-sea salt
3 steps to make old fashioned french toast:
1. Into a mixing bowl crack 2 eggs and beat with a whisk until frothy. Add β
cup of milk to the eggs and mix with a whisk. Lastly add all the seasonings, ΒΌ teaspoon cinnamon, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, β
teaspoon sea salt.
2. Slice bread into 1-inch thick slices.
3. Heat a skillet on medium heat and a teaspoon of coconut oil. Dip one slice of bread into the batter, coat both sides, and place it into the preheated skillet. Cook about a minute on each side. Repeat with remaining bread.
Place finished toast onto a paper towel on a plate to absorb excess oil.
Serve your french toast with your favorite toppings some of our favorites are warm maple syrup, jam, berry syrup, powder sugar or whipped topping.
What bread is best for french toast?
-brioche, french, baguette, or challah are all great bread loaves to use for french toast.
How to avoid soggy toast?
-Make sure to use older bread NOT fresh bread
-Cut thick slices; thin flimsy slices cause soggy toast
-Don't over-soak bread in batter, just coat both sides
Can I make the batter ahead of time?
-To cut down on your morning cooking you can make the custard batter up to 24 hours in advance and store it in the refrigerator until ready to toast.
How long is toasted french toast good for?
-In the refridgerator from 5 to 7 days or in the frezzer for 1 month. Which makes this recipe a great breakfast meal prep.
Recipe substitutions:
-Whole milk- can be substituted with any nut milk. For example, almond milk, or coconut milk for a healthy dairy-free alternative.
-Coconut oil- can be substituted with butter for a richer toast.
