Did you know perfect rows of vegetables and herbs in your garden are not only for aesthetically pleasing reasons? They serve a purpose...
Watch as I show and explain why I prefer Row Gardening
Some of the reasons why I recommend Row Gardening:
1. It keeps your plants' root systems evenly spaced,
2. Efficient irrigation- It is easier to water and improved drainage. It is also easier to install an automatic watering system.
3. Easier to weed
4. Better access to sunlight.
What you will need to plant perfectly straight rows:
- A Board-any straight board will work. It's easier if the board is the full length of the row.
or
- String and 2 sticks- With a string you can have more freedom of which way and how long your rows will be.
Step by Step
Prep soil- Till or loosen the soil with a shovel so it's even and level removing any rocks, weeds, or branches as you smooth out the soil. Add any nutrients, fertilizer, or compost at this point.
Layout- Make a garden layout of what goes where and how many rows you need for each plant.
Decide whether you will use a board or a string.
Board- After the soil is prepped lay down the board where you want the row to be and along the edge start planting or sowing seeds. If your board is shorter you can slowly move it up as you plant but make sure you are keeping it straight and not letting the row start curving.
String- This works well for very long rows! Place stakes (large nails, wood pieces, old pipe, or pole) at the begging of where you want the row to be and 1 at the end of the row. Then, tie a string from either end and start planting along the string.
Plant- Now either lay down the board or set up the string and start planting each row one at a time.
